Are you also always on the lookout for healthier snacks for your kiddos?
I am usually quite particular with the type of snacks that I serve to my kids – best options would be snacks with NO preservatives, color or flavoring. While I try to limit the amount of processed food or snacks they eat daily, it can be a challenge for us working parents to provide wholesome and healthy snacks to the kiddos.
Earlier this year, our kids’ childcare centre requested for us to bring late noon snacks from home, as their tea break is served around 3+, and the growing kids usually would be hungry by 5pm!
We were quite happy with this initiative, and the childcare centre also provided guidelines for the snacks. I was so happy that they do not allow highly processed food / snack – but that also mean that we cannot bring homemade muffins or cookies (lol)!
So finding the right type of snack had been quite challenging for me, as I usually try to rotate the selection of snacks each day as much as possible.
Healthier Alternatives For Kids’ Snacks
Other than providing bread, fresh fruits and nuts, I later turned to freeze dried fruits because it was easy to store and carry around without much mess. What’s even better is that the kids enjoyed them too!
So when Kiwigarden offered to send us a few packs of their new range of snacks, we were happy to be able to try them out!
We know that parents know best for kids! Kiwigarden is started by Joanne Edwards, a former lawyer and mum of 3.
As with all mums, we are always on the constant search for healthy and nutritious food as well as snacks for our kids. In Joanne’s search for nutritious food options, she started her freeze-drying journey. Since she had access to her family’s commercial facility, she started turning apple slices and sweet corn kernels into healthy, crunchy and tasty snacks.
The Kiwigarden range focuses on all-natural freeze dried fruits, vegetables and yoghurt drops. These freeze dried snacks are mostly made from New Zealand grown and farmed produce (except for bananas that can’t grow in New Zealand).
Why Is Freeze Drying Good?
Freeze drying uses a special process where gentle drying is used to remove the moisture content, while ensuring that nutrients are being locked in.
You can also be sure that freeze dried snacks is one of the more convenient foods that us parents can incorporate into our busy lifestyles, without compromising on nutrition and taste for our kids.
Kiwigarden is also committed to using premium New Zealand ingredients that are naturally rich in vitamins and minerals. Win-win for parents and kiddos!
New Range of Superfoods Snacks!
Kiwigarden has recently launched a new range of superfoods snacks, featuring New Zealand grown berries, fruits and yoghurt drops. You can find new items such as the Crunchy Apple & Strawberry Slices, Greek Style Yoghurt Drops & Strawberry Slices, Greek Style Yoghurt Drops & Whole Blueberries, as well as Green Peas & Sweet Corn Kernels.
The range of snacks is crafted with toddlers in mind, and best suits kids from 12 – 18 months old.
Of course older kiddos will also appreciate these crunchy freeze-dried snacks – my 5+ year old did! 🙂
So let’s take a look at the various freeze-dried snacks from Kiwigarden now!
We really love that these yoghurt drops in various fruity flavors!
Let’s take a look at how these snacks look like, with no additional preservatives, coloring or flavoring.
The Golden Kiwi yoghurt drops has a melty texture, with a slight sweetness to it. Like yoghurt, it carries a little tang in itself, and is absolutely yummilicious for an appetising snack! The strong kiwi taste at the end of the yoghurt drop surprised me as well – I wouldn’t expect such a focus on quality in kids’ snacks, honestly 🙂
I am a blueberry fan! So I am naturally fascinated to see an entire freeze dried berry! It held the shape pretty well for each of the blueberry in the package. The Greek Style yoghurt drops seem to be less sweet than the Golden Kiwi, so it’s a great choice if you do not want your child to taste too much sweetness in their snack.
The freeze dried blueberry has a really crisp and airy texture, to a chewy finish, and with a strong blueberry taste at the end of it – which I really love!
The freeze dried strawberry slices taste just like the fresh ones – minus the juicy mess!
I really appreciate the burst of flavor of from the strawberry slices.
We were really pleasantly surprised by the quality of these freeze dried fruits! My kids were so excited, identifying the various fruits, which was great for my younger daughter who is learning to speak now.
I was also happy to see that they retain most part of the fruits – do you see the peel on the apple slices? The strawberry slices were also more of chunks than slices, which means the kiddos get more of the flavor packed in as well!
If you’d also like to offer more variety, other than fruits, fret not! Kiwigarden also carries freeze dried green peas and sweet corn kernels snack – lookin’ just like the actual veggie!
Oh.. And also not forgetting these handy packs of crunchy apple slices in a box! I was thinking that these handy packs are really great for goodie bags during birthday celebrations!
